CELEBRATION SLATED FOR SEPT. 9 AT GREENSPRINGS NATURAL CEMETERY PRESERVE

NEWFIELD, NY—Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve the first of its kind in New York State, will host a celebration picnic for members and others interested in “green burials” on Sept. 9 at the Cemetery.

Greensprings offers a natural alternative to conventional burials which can entail embalming fluid, expensive coffins, large stones, etc.  Loved ones buried at Greensprings return to the earth in winding sheets or blankets, natural fabric shrouds or simple wooden caskets and soon become part of a lovely meadow at Irish Hill Road in Newfield.  Graves can be marked by flat stones and the vista is not cluttered by monuments.

It is a beautiful place to visit and that is exactly what the Greensprings Trustees envision for the Sept. 9 party, a host of members and visitors convening for a picnic together from noon until 3 p.m.   A duo will play vintage jazz during lunch which will be followed by a brief “State of the Cemetery” presentation by Board President Herb Engman.

The event will be a “dish to pass” format (beverages will be on hand). Walking tours of the cemetery will be offered and members will be delighted to answer any questions visitors may have about the Greensprings experience.  This will be a celebratory gathering.  If you wish to purchase a site you may make an appointment at the celebration to return to purchase or choose a site in the near future.

There will also be a presentation and bench dedication in the Bobolink Meadow to celebrate the EcoVillage partnership with Greensprings.
